Project Description
With the Creature Mark project, the task was to create a simplified Black & White "mark" of an animal of my choosing, that conveys the key physical and non-physical characteristics of the creature.
Research
The selected creature for this project was the Budgett Frog. Prior to sketching, research was done to ascertain the physical and non-physical characteristics of the frog.
Physical
- Flat Body
- Large round and flat head
- Protruding Spherical Eyes
- Large Mouth
- Webbed Feet
- Indent in the middle of the body
Non-Physical
- Aggressive
- Screams when provoked
- Carnivorous
- Eats anything smaller than them
- Eats prey whole
Sketching
The structure of the frog was determined during this phase. Different ideas on how to convey the characteristics of this frog were also explored.
Digital Iterations
After the sketching phase, the iteration phase began. During this phase several peer reviews were done to refine the final design.
Final Mark
Visual & Typographic Composition
"The humble Budgett Frog Channels its mighty rage Unleashed in One Shout."
After creating the creature mark of the Budgett Frog, the next task was to create a non-literal visual composition around the mark that incorporates a given phrase in a typographically appealing manner.
Sketching
The sketching phase began the same way as with the creature mark. The phase focused on exploring different ideas to convey the meaning of the phrase
Digital Iterations
Translating the sketches into a digital format, the iterations focused on experimenting with black & white variations of those sketches. After mostly narrowing down on a black & white design, color was applied and iterated on.
